Battery Safety and Efficiency at KIT
Dr.Carlos Ziebert of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) recently shared insights into the group's groundbreaking work at Europe’s largest Battery Calorimeter Laboratory.
Established in 2011, the lab focuses on calorimetric studies and safety tests for lithium-ion and post-lithium cells. Using advanced tools like Accelerating Rate Calorimeters (ARCs), 3D Calvet calorimeters, and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry systems, the team evaluates thermal and safety data under various conditions.
The interdisciplinary team collaborates across Europe, growing from four members in February 2020 to fifteen, thanks to successful funding from national projects AnaLiBa and BatgasMod, and the European Horizon 2020 project HELIOS.
They have now published an interesting interview and e-book called ''Calorimetric studies and safety tests on lithium-ion cells and post-lithium cells'' that explores the thermal and safety properties of batteries across calorimetric studies and explains how the HELIOS battery packs guarantee sustainability, performance, and improved safety.
